Press Release

In solidarity with the community of Sanford, Florida, Councilman Charles Barron, State Assemblywoman Inez Barron, Family of Ramarley Graham, Family of Jateik Reed, The Freedom Party, Other Elected Officials and Community Groups denounce the killing of Trayvon Martin, along with the killing of Ramarley Graham, and the brutal beating of Jateik Reed.

On Monday, March 26th at 4:00pm on the Steps of City Hall – Councilman Charles Barron, State Assemblywoman Inez Barron, Families of Ramarley and Jateik Reed, other elected officials and community groups and leaders will hold a press conference and rally to denounce the recent killing Trayvon Martin.

As a show of solidarity and support they will hold this rally at the same time that elected officials and church leaders will be holding a rally on the steps of City Hall in Sanford, Fl. They will gather to denounce the killing of Trayvon Martin and call for the Justice Department to conduct a thorough investigation and for the Seminole Police Department to arrest George Zimmerman.

George Zimmerman is accused of killing 17 year old Trayvon Martin on February 26th while he walked through a gated community in Sanford after buying Skittles and a can of Iced Tea from the local 7-Eleven.

Ramarley Graham was killed on February 2nd by NYPD officers in the bathroom of his parent’s Bronx apartment in front of his grandmother and six year old brother. Police did not have a search warrant and the 18 year old was unarmed. Critics have challenged aggressive police tactics including beating of Jateik Reed by the police, Commissioner Kelly’s stop and frisk policy and called for the Bronx District Attorney, Robert Johnson to submit evidence to a grand jury for criminal charges against the officers.

Councilman Barron declares, “This madness must stop. We have a God given, constitutional, human right to move about safely and freely in our communities. These cold blood killers must be brought to justice. The families of Ramarley Graham and Trayvon Martin call for justice in the unjust killing of their sons.

Councilman Charles Barron, along with School, Parent, Union and community leaders save W. H. Maxwell Career and Technical Education High School from the Department of Education’s Chopping Block

New York, N.Y., Councilman Charles Barron announces that W.H. Maxwell Career and Technical Education High School was saved from the Department of Education’s ill-conceived and irrational closure decision by the concerted efforts of the dedicated parents, school administration, teacher’s union and community leaders from our educational family..

The Department of Education made a late Monday announcement that it would not be closing seven city schools (out of 33 scheduled to be closed). However, this decision was the direct result of peoples outrage towards D.O.E.’s closure actions that would have shut-down schools that were rated A & B under the Department of Education’s own guidelines.

Councilman Barron stated in particular to the W.H. Maxwell H.S. situation that “Once again the Department of Education had put the educational community within and surrounding W.H. Maxwell High School in jeopardy by violating its (D.O.E.’s) own standards of evaluation and ratings.” The Councilman went on to say “the D.O.E. actions are only proof that their policies are not the result of concern for the development of our children and that we must be vigilante and  intensify our efforts in defending our children’s right to a quality education.
